June-bearing strawberry

June-bearing strawberry

Family: Rosaceae
Genus: Fragaria
Speciee: Fragaria x ananassa

Description

The strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) is a perennial herbaceous species belonging to the Rosaceae family.
Strawberries have been cultivated since the XVI Century; many of the varieties currently found on sale were created by hybridizing Fragraria chiloensis and Fragraria virginiana.
According to the period in which they bear their fruit, strawberry plants can be divided into 2 groups: ever-bearing (or remontant) species, which produce fruit in summer and the first months of autumn, and June-bearing species.
June-bearing strawberry plants only flower once, in the Spring, and produce their fruits before the Summer begins.
To grow strawberries you need medium textured soil, which is rich in organic matter and very fertile.
The plants are herbaceous and creeping, and produce stolons (also known as runners).
The root system is fascicled, with fairly fleshy main roots from which thinner secondary roots branch off.
The stem, known as the crown, is a modified rhizome which becomes slightly woody as the years go by, it has a limited vertical growth.
Petioles or leaf stalks around 12 cm long branch off the crown, at the tip they have 3 leaves with dentate edges (the edge is different for each variety).
June-bearing strawberry plants flower at the beginning of Spring, they have a “corymb” formed of tiny white flowers with sepals at the base. A corymb is an inflorescence in which the peduncles, that bear the flowers, are inserted in various points of the stem and end at the same height.
The plants bear their fruit at the end of Spring, it is interesting to know that the strawberry is a “false fruit” created by a swelling of the receptacle.  The size, colour, consistency and flavour vary according to the variety.
Strawberries are eaten raw or used to prepare jam, syrups and liqueurs.
