Melon

Melon

Family: Cucurbitaceae
Genus: Cucumis
Species: C. melo

Description

The melon (Cucumis melo) belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family, it is an annual herbaceous plant, which can be creeping or climbing.
The plant produces fascicled roots that can grow to a depth of over 150 cm. The stem, which is covered with hairs, is branched and has tendrils that the plant uses to climb and attach itself to supports. The leaves are alternate, covered with hairs and normally rounded, according to the variety they are from 5 cm to 20 cm wide at the base.
The plants are generally monoecious, that is to say they produce yellow, 5 petalled, flowers that are both male (the first that appear, grouped together in inflorescences) and female (recognizable because they have an ovary that swells at the bottom). Only 10% of the great number of flowers produced become fruit, because the plant is only capable of maturing a limited number. The large fruit can be round, sometimes flattened, oval or elongated; the skin can be smooth, netted, rough, wrinkled with or without ribs, in colours ranging from greenish grey to dark green and various shades of yellow. The flesh can also be of various colours according to the variety grown, it can be orange, white, greenish, pink or salmon colour. The fruit has a central cavity containing a great number of seeds.
