Start in a good seed compost in pot or trays. Put seed in on its side as they seem to germinate better but do not over water, As soon as large enough to handle, prick seeds out into individual pots and let them grow on. Some varieties can only grow outdoors in warmer zones, Otherwise plant out when all danger of frost has passed. I grow a wide variety successfully outdoor including Crystal Apple and Hmong. If you provide some kind of trellis or frame for them to grow up they will take up less space and keep the fruits clean and away from slugs and woodlice which seem to have a fondness for some varietues.
