I garden in zone 23 (San Diego). Recently while digging in decomposed granite, I uncovered about six white jelly bean sized thingys I had never seen. I am about 10 inches down. So curosity killed this cat and I fondled and squeezed and a mucous like flem substance comes shooting out. I sensed it to be an embryo of some kind. (I had to squeez them all). Did I kill something potentially wonderful and rare? The next Grandous Supermanous? Anyone?

sounds like Mike is right.  Did they have a bit of grey on one end?  That is the head.  I used to feed these to my Coati Mundi.  She loved them.  Made the mistake of holding her while she ate them.  When I tried to take my hand back, she bit my thumb.  Guess she thought it was a grub as well.
